Learning about the pioneers along our own mini journey

The rag doll station

Our pioneer activity was a huge success! It was put together in a single month by myself and my primary presidency (Kristen Dvorak, Leanne Aldous and Jenny Smith). We felt it was important because our ward does not celebrate pioneer days and the children learn very little about the Mormon pioneers.

We had twice as many children show up as we planned on...but we were prepared. And all of the children loved the event! Many children learned that they love to wash clothes by hand with a washboard (since then Luke keeps saying he wants to wash our clothes with our washboard). They learned they love using needle and thread on fabric...even though we didn't actually teach them to cross stitch or sew (simply handed them the fabric and "said have fun").

We faced many small hidden cacti along our trail. The children were warned to watch out for cactus. And the adults watched for the childrens sake. Yet we still had many accidents due to sandal wearing and skin showing. But all survived and learned some hardships of traveling by foot.
